Description

Faeire appeal

What does the faery want? Who is the man and why does he look so uninterested?

Why indeed.

MyPaint + GIMP. I tried a different workflow for this, inspired by deevad's [link] speedpaints, starting from a greyscale base and colouring afterwards. I normally start with colours immediately. The workflow change is quite interesting, especially for establishing light.

This was made for an exhibition with the ffx-forums 'virtuoso' team here [link] (check it out!).

This picture reminds me a bit of old masters' portraits. The face is very lively, with a lot of character. I like the scarring and the lifelike wet gleam of the eyes. The fluffy texture of the robe(?) looks also very lifelike and realistic.
The fairy could do with some more rendering because it looks a bit like a cutout and the light that she emits looks more like fog. It distracts a bit from the realistically rendered man. I can understand that on his own he would be a rather boring image, however.
I also thing that some cold greens and blues on the coloring would help this picture greatly, bringing out the warm reds and browns of the face and the robe. It's a danger with the greyscale workflow.
Overall, superb, old-master-like rendering job on the man. Coloring could take some improvement.
