Artist's Comments

I always wondered why creators of fantasy stories spend so much time creating elaborate worlds, with wholly original locations, history, religions, customs and characters -- and then choose to put in the bog standard elves and dwarves in there ... Tolkien did that already -- and a long time ago!

At any rate, this is another image from my roleplaying campaign and rule booklet,of one of the rare non-human races of that campaign world.

Quick image done in GIMP as usual. Comments always appreciated. It really comes out better in full view, so check it out.

The eyes! THE EEEYYEEESSS! WAAAUUUUUGH!!!!

Heheh, actually, that's pretty spiffy. I like how the skin seems semi-translucent showing some of the sub-surface vascular tissues and such.

The only thing that I notice, is the white wrinkle-lines around the eyes on the near side, especially around the lower eye on that side. I don't think the color needs to change at all, maybe just soften/blend them a tad.

Good stuff, as always.

Thanks a lot! I think I know what you mean about the wrinkles under the eye, I have tweaked them a bit to make them less bright. The sharpness some lines get sometimes comes from scaling down the original I think ... I think it's fixed now, otherwise I must blur them a bit more.

Hope it looks better now!

Wow! for a quick render that's very impressive. Nice work as always.

Charles
p.s. the eyes seem more polished then the rest of the piece.

yeah, scaling down can do some weird things occasionally. It looks much better now. I still see one or two little harsh lines, but I'd probably have to circle them in order to point them out. Which means unless someone saw the 'before' they probably won't notice them now.

this is really quite neat. ;D it brings to mind some of the other conventions in most fantasy as well: ok, your new race has 6 eyes....but is it still bipedal? can it wear human armor/equipment without any significant modifications? just how different from the norm is it, really?

once you step away from the "human except for longer ears and botox" conventions, then the possibilities are endless. :D i'm looking forward to more wild concepts.

@Curly

Heh, yes you are of course right that a sentient fantasy "race" could look either way and that the possibilities are rather un-explored also in this image.

Why would this thing have a face-shape even resembling humans, for example -- with the ears places where they are etc... I think of it as a bit of an artistic cheat: If the creature is not supposed to be completely alien but also inspire some sort of emotional response from players (which are human), some similarities are required, even though it's probably "unrealistic" (if that's the right thing to say for a fantasy creature ... ;-) ).

To answer your question, these particular beings don't wear any clothing or armour whatsoever. :D . Nor do they speak in any way humans can hear (similar to bats), or understand human sign languages or expressions (just as little as humans understand what one of their grimaces might mean). Communication with humans are completely dependent on magics or various special machinery.

I think a more 'wild' fantasy race design might be this old image: [link]

Thanks for the comment and encouragement! :D

I have seen things so beautiful, that they have brought tears to my eyes. Yet, none of them can match the gracefulness and beauty of a horse running free.

Saved with a different scaling algorithm that creates smoother output. Hopefully should get rid of the problem.

Thanks! I have done some tweaks to the image, but since there is supposed to be a depth-effect on the image, some parts of the image is intentionally blurred a bit.
