Watched Wave - Christmas Card 2012 by Griatch-art Watched Wave - Christmas Card 2012 by Griatch-art
Watched Wave

You never know who's watching when you're out in the forest.

Update: You can now watch a timelapse video I recorded while painting this. You can find it on YouTube here: [link] (consider watching in HD quality)

My Christmas card for this year. Putting it up early as usual, to get feedback and in case people want to get a card of their own as a DA print. Oh, and an early Merry Christmas!

An insane amount of detail in this one, lots of which might not come across fully in this smaller size. Will be interesting to see how the print fairs. Can you spot all the "watchers"?

Some details:

Done in open-source programs MyPaint and GIMP.

Previous Christmas Cards:

2011 (Vaettebron):

2010 (Good neighbours):

2009 (Surprise gift):

2008 (Night in the troll forest):

2007 (We're THIS tight!):

Gorgeous piece, like all your cards, and each year it gets more impressive than the last. The detail and realism here is beautiful, I especially love the snowy trees, all the different types.

Thanks Gaeva! I take way too long time in making these; but it's fun and friends and family are actually starting to send some physical Christmas cards back to me in turn - so the curiosity is turning into a tradition. :)

Thanks! MyPaint is a nice program, also GIMP and Krita are excellent open-source programs to test if you are into digital painting.

Out of curiosity, why would you think quality art could not be created on Linux?

Well I still think Photoshop is the absolute best for painting and picture editing. Mainly that's why :)

(I was also experiencing problems with tablet and thougt linux doesnt support pressure sensitivity on the tablet. Ofc I found out I was wrong, and my talbet works fine now :D)

Photoshop is very nice - for that price it would be strange if it wasn't. :) PS certainly has its place for professional publishing. The investment cost is not warranted for the vast majority of users though. Many small-scale freelance professionals work just fine using open-source software -- an amateur or hobby user has even fewer actual requirements. In most cases very similar results can be achieved, it's just a different set of tools to learn.

Linux has very good support for some tablets - notably Wacom tablets (which are market leaders). Other brands usually work but it's more on a case-by-case basis and may take some more work to get things running. Nevertheless, Linux is pretty easy to set up and use these days, the time of compiling things for yourself is (mostly) gone, at least on the hardware side.

Im still very used to photoshop. But until I actually get to work and make some money drawing/painting I should stick to opensource...
BTW for some reason my Krita and Mypaint aren't stable at all, krita crashes like all the time.. And mypaint just seems to stop working sometimes its very frustrating? Do u by any chance know why??

It's very hard to tell just like that why your Krita/MyPaint would be unstable. If you find a problem and can reproduce it, consider making a bug report so the developers can fix it.

I follow the "bleeding edge" versions of both programs, so I expect that they can be occationally unstable (I get the very latest features). In practice I have used MyPaint's bleeding edge for many years without many hickups at all. Krita is a bit more finicky to follow on the bleeding edge but it works.

If you use old versions ("stable" versions in some repositories can sometimes be -very- old) you might consider following a dev-branch instead to see if that fixes your issues.

I don't remember off the bat if you are using Windows or Linux but it seems much OSS software is less stable on Windows simply because most developers use Linux. If you use Windows, consider a dual-boot setup. Personally I only use Windows for the occational game and use Linux for all serious professional or hobby work.

There is really not much to them except a lot of pretty boring and repetitive brush work. If you look at the video linked in the caption you should get a pretty decent idea about what it entails. Is there some particular aspect of painting pines you have issues with?

I dunno, those pine detailing was awesome :)
I always painting traditionally. I'm very new to digital paintings, so I don't know yet if I've some particular issue or not :)

I'm also originally a "traditional" painter, mainly in oils as well as lots of drawing work in charchoal and pencil. I switched to GIMP and other open-source painting software some ten years ago and never looked back. You can usually work very similarly on the computer as you do on the canvas, the principles are quite similar once you learn the program(s) well.

I see :) I also use only opensource softwares. and i started digital paintings few weeks ago...just setting my hand on the tablet.
first i felt like it's not possible to have allthe traditional painting effects digitally...like watercolour wet-on-wet or oil painting's palette-knife effect...but after seeing some arts including yours on dA..i am convinced that it can be done, just needs more time and practice and specially understanding the software style of work :)

I recommend MyPaint and Krita for producing more painter-ly effects. However it should be noted that even though these programs do offer a lot of very fun and interesting digital brushes, the computer (and the tablet) is a new painting tool one has to learn, same way one has to learn to properly handle brushes and palette knives etc in traditional painting.

So, it does take some time to get used to painting digitally but as long as one remembers the computer is just another painting tool it will work itself out eventually. :)

yes I agree. But I cant work much in krita because my tablet doesnt have pressure in krita. it's not a wacom.
So I have to limit myself with gimp and mypaint..
Though krita has become a complete painting studio recently..but alas.
