Usurper saga - The Empress by Griatch-art Usurper saga - The Empress by Griatch-art
Concept art from game project with work title "The Usurper".

All from scratch and my imagination. This is partially Asian-inspired but some ideas were also taken from European royal gowns - and the world concept is really a mixture of all sorts of cultures. I didn't want the Empress to have a crown; the form of the "halo"-thingie also has some significance, as does (of course) the scar across her face.

Done in MyPaint + GIMP, over a bunch of hours. Comments and feedback welcome as usual!

So as it is a combination of influences, dos this mean you basically designed this dress yourself? Because it is a gorgeous looking dress design.

The overall fall in the back is inspired by an European royal gown, but yes, the dress design and fabrics are all my fault. :) Glad you like it!

I did redo parts of it actually since people gave me feedback that some of the fabrics would not fall the way they did in the initial version, but I hope it should be all corrected now.

No, unfortunately I didn't record a making-of video of this one.

(just so you know - if you reply to yourself I won't get notified by your message, that is the reason for this late reply. It was a pure coincidence that I happened to notice your question now. ;))

I love her dress. It' very detailed and has an amazing design. I like the contrast between the colours you've used in this painting. The environment doesn't draw much attention, and I find it a little bit sad, because it's actually very well drawn.

The colors are indeed picked to contrast the foreground from the background. The background is not meant to distract too much, but I think it does add to the overall feeling of 3D-space in any image. And from the comments here it seems many people do nevertheless notice the background. :) Thanks a lot for the comment!

What catches me most on this piece are the subtle things. Light in the vines, in the clouds, soft silhouette of shoulder behind the fan. I don't know what is the strange glow behind the head of the empress, but it was definitely a good move. I cannot name it, but i like what it does with the sky, i think it also draws the attention to the character. In this atmosphere the dress contrasts with it, feeling heavy. Of course not whole, Just the red part with the stripe texture. Probably it is just me, because the way it hangs, or is "dragged" by the person wearing it does not imply it would be heavy. Grandma had some blanket with very similar color, texture and pattern and i remember it being heavy, so probably this association confuses me. Bleh, my own pity, if it was not this i would like the picture even more.

Thanks for your kind feedback!

I was quite happy with the light emphasis of light behind her head, not many seem to notice it. I made this picture as the type of portrait she would herself order be made of herself, and as such the artist would of course make every effort of making her come across as an impressive Empress - so the light behind her head could well be artistic license by that fictive artist.
The dress is indeed heavy, with thick fabrics. It's cut in a way to remove a lot of material but it's nevertheless unlikely she'll walk anywhere fast in it. It's really something you wear to look impressive, not for walking around in.

Nice rendering of the background.
Awesome rendering of the clothes and textiles and high detail.
I like your mixing of culture elements
Eyes are a bit too wide set IMHO and hands are slightly too thin.
Great work as always!

The details of her clothing were indeed what took the most time, glad it shows! I have made some adjustments to the hands, hopefully better now. As for the eyes I guess that's a matter of taste. :) Thanks for the comment!

Very well-done. If you didn't know it was a digital piece, you wouldn't know that it was a digital piece. This looks a lot more like paint than pixels.

I have heard some claim some parts here look like water color, which is interesting since I'm originally an oil painter rather than water-color painter. ;) The piece not looking too "digital" is a good thing in general I think. Thanks for the comment and fave!
