I dreamed this scene, weirdly enough. So I took the chance to use that inspiration to create a wallpaper for my dual-screen Linux install. This is the result. I'm quite content with how the greenery and water came out in this.

MyPaint + GIMP. About 8 hours.

As usual, comments and critique are most welcome!

I made a sequence of screenshots outlining how this image came to be. You can find it here: [link] if you are interested (hosted on GimpTalk).

Thanks. :)

These days (since MyPaint 1.0) MyPaint actually has a "Frame" function that allows you to limit what is and what isn't saved from the infinite canvas. For me it's usually still as easy to just export to GIMP and crop there though.

Good perspective! What is she fishing for? I've heard it said that if you dream in black and white it's from the devil, color is from God. . .

I don't know what the little tomte (I believe the beard makes it a 'he') fishes for, maybe he's just relaxing and not trying to catch anything in particular. :) Hadn't heard of different meanings of dreaming in b&w vs colour, that's a pretty fun myth. :) I guess devil's dreams tend to be more common the night after having seen an old black-and-white movie. ;)

A fellow mypaint user :D Found you from mypaint wiki-page :3

I really like the mood in this and the sun going through the trees. Nice atmosphere. Critiques are sometimes matter of opinion more than making things better but gonna say it anyway; I made would have brought the light in the end of river more up. I saw that you wanted this not to be so toned and that is not what I am looking from it, but maybe more contrast, so the light would come up more or bring the fisherman out a bit more.... hmm... how come I suck at critiques or suggestions.

Anyway. I like this and it's mood

Hi, yes I've used MyPaint since 0.5, it's really encouraging that it's seeing more adaptation among more people these days. :)

Thanks for the critique! The contrast is, as you say, pretty much a matter of personal preference at this point - if you look at the linked WIP series of images at the top, you'll find that I already upped contrast in a few steps from the original "raw" painting.
I see what you mean about making the fisherman more visible - the reason I didn't make him stand out more was originally since I didn't intend him to be the main focus of the image; in a way I like that one might have to do a double-take to spot him on a first view of the image.

Thanks for the feedback and fave! :D

Hey and sorry for the late reply >,<
Now when you mentioned the point, it is pretty obvious :D As all things when pointed out.

But hey, won't lower the value of the great work! I have fallen love even more to that program. Gotta say... someone made good work :)
And no problem, it really was my pleasure ^^

Great! And it's not weird that you dreamed it, I once dreamed about a temple in an island with a giant horse like guardian! I made a sketch about it but of course, my sketching ability wasn't that good back then xD.

If I actually have the patience to improve my drawing ability this year (and I will have to, since I want to be a graphic designer) I might do a decent one this time :)

Anyways, it's a great drawing, I'll fav it right away.

I really like this. The sense of stillness from the forest contrasts nicely with the business of the water. The play of light and shadow is really nice, too.

I can't tell if that is supposed to be a tiny man, or if the vegetation is gigantic. If neither, I think you have some issues with your distance, because I don't get the sense that the fisherman is far enough away to be smaller (in perspective) than the weeds in the foreground.

Yes, the guy is tiny. It is a scandinavian entity known as a "Tomte" which, in legends lived in the forests (and occationally in people's barns). You can see a more close-up version of him in my 2008 Christmas card.

Attention to detail, such as the trees leaning in toward the river due to erosion, volumetric light coming through the branches, the motion in the water, all combine to make a beautiful work of art.

I already made a MyPaint+GIMP tutorial some time ago. I also made a work-progression image series for this particular image. It's not a full tutorial, but shows the workflow from initial sketch to final result.
Maybe fun to check out, it's all in the tutorial list. ;)
