Shrike - Study II by Griatch-art Shrike - Study II by Griatch-art
Sorry for repeating the same subject over and over, but I need the training. :)

I got a lot of good critique and feedback on my first Shrike Study here on DA as well as elsewhere on the web (thanks!). Looking at it now, I myself can only agree with the critique, that's what a fresh eye will do for you!
However, as I sat down to try to fix things I came to the conclusion it was better to start all over again rather than to fix the old image. So I did, using roughly the same angle and concept (although I ended up using a different background and a slightly more realistic style).

Whereas I did intend the last one to be a "young" version of the main protagonist in my Shrike saga, I did this with her being older again. The proportions and angles should hopefully be better. I also experimented a bunch with giving more pores to the skin as well as many more things.

As usual, I'm very interested in getting feedback on this, it\'s by far the best way to improve. :)

MyPaint + GIMP, about 5 hours.

UPDATE: Fixed some aspects of this, thanks for the feedback!

Thanks! Yes the old study use more dramatic colours, it's a good point, always good to get input on this. :)

VERY VERY good work!

Not much of a painter, but, there are two things I have questions about as far as a critique is concerned. First, is her lower lip supposed to be two shades darker than her upper lip? (not knowing the storyline I'm not criticizing, just wondering, because I looked at the first pic and her lips were the same shade there) Second, (and this is fairly minor) are her eyes supposed to be so dark I can't tell what color they are?

Not criticizing, just asking questions, because this is MUCH MUCH better than I can do digitally. So, this is to not detract from the pic at all, because it is AWESOME!

It's a good point about the lips, I made them more of a similar colour now. The effect was actually pretty cool I guess, but not really what I intended, thanks for pointing it out. ;) The eyes are very dark, but I did add some splotches of brown to them to hopefully make them slightly clearer (I could see the colour in them before too though, maybe my monitor is brighter?). Hopefully better now, at any rate!
Thanks for the comment and feedback, most useful!

Welcome! I was just wondering about the lips cause they caught my eye.

And not seeing the eyes right may be my tiny laptop screen's fault, If I had a larger screen it might have been OK. Don't know.

And you're welcome!

Looks great but I'm not so sure about that shoulder. Maybe it's just me.

Good point about the shoulder. I have modified the furthermost one a bit. Assuming that was the one you meant, it should hopefully look more natural now, thanks!

Teeth are arrayed in an arch, and the lips should wrap around them. Your lips here still lie on a flat plane, but they should curve around the teeth more. Also, the sides of the lower lip should meet the sides of the upper lip more. In other words, the corners of the upper and lower lips should be more connected. Otherwise it looks great!

Thanks for the feedback! I've been looking over the mouth and tried a few modifications as per your suggestsions, but in the end I kept the original. Guess it's a matter of preference at this point. :) I did change the coloration of the lips a bit however, which should hopefully make the lips "go together" better.
Thanks a lot for the comment, really made me go back to those lips, very useful!

Oh Yes! more sexy and more realistic, if this was what you were looking for (as i read) then is a successs. i like a lot how you have placed the eyes. To make pores is a complicate task without special brushes, but making them is not so complex (the brushes). Good job, now she looks a TV serie Actress

Cool, great improvement. Painfull process to redo a painting from the scratch, but the best way to do high jump in skill ( imo ).

Capturing age has been a recent challenge for me. I think looking closely at the differences between these two paintings might help quite a bit.
