Description

Morning Sweeper

A relatively quick study of light and volume. Painted basically in one layer, with some minor tweaks at the end. As usual, comments are appreciated!

MyPaint + GIMP, 4 hours.

Update: Some tweaks of the relative contrasts and removed the window.

I think you have captured the light in this piece excellently. The glowing feeling coming from the light cast on the wall is palpable.

I also like the loose way the scene is rendered. This piece seems to be mostly about the light, and excessive detail would detract from that. If anything, I might soften and lose some of the edges of the cluttered shelf.

My only real criticism is that the figure doesn't seem to be lit correctly. The light is shown directly hitting the side of her(?) face, the chair in front of her, and the post behind. Also, the broom handle and the place where the straws are bundled on. However, her right arm and leg are still mostly in shadow. In addition, the entire back of the figure is at the same level of shadow. With the light striking her in the front, I would expect the center of her back, beneath her butt, and the area where the dress is stretched between her legs to be darker. It would add to the appearance of roundness, for certain.

Emotionally, it's an interesting and complex work. The sameness of the colors suggests a drab, boring, monotonous life for this person. But she's up at dawn, sweeping. She doesn't seem stooped by her life or her work, so maybe she's taking a bit of pleasure and encouragement from the warm sunlight. If there were any religious icons in the picture I'd be tempted to believe the light was a metaphor for Faith.
