Hardcase Owl by Griatch-art Hardcase Owl by Griatch-art
You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Well, who else are you talkin' to? You talkin' to me? Well, I'm the only one here ...

For some reason owls have this great PR going. If they are depicted in a cartoony fashion they are most often portrayed as wise, elderly and all around nice folks. When in reality they are just as stone-hard killers as ever a shark or for that matter a dolphin. I can get why a dolphin gets a good rep - they at least seem to smile back at you. Not so an owl - it's actually a really spooky-looking bird. Clearly their PR department is top-notch.

Here I tried to depict an owl you don't want to mess with. Yes, that's a bird-scar. Apparently they really can squint their eyes like that, it's just that they normally keep their eyes wide open. Maybe this is mid-blink ... maybe it's just judging us ...

Painted entirely with Krita's default sketch brush, with some guidelines from an owl reference. Used GIMP for some tweaking. Total time some three hours or so.

Done also for the deviant-deadlines contest [link] which has the theme "owls" this week.

I simply love the colour range and the textures! Also, it's great that you painted a realistic owl, creepy and intimidating, because that's just how they are. I love them anyways, they are so majestic!

You're up next!

Thanks Noctiluna, owls are majestic but also pretty spooky-looking birds, It was fun toying with making a hardcase variant of one. Glad you like it, the new challenge is already posted. :)

Yes, it is terribly disturbing that they have eyelids and can blink/wink at you. :fear: They're creepy in a cool way though, and you've depicted it well here. The style looks a little Impressionistic to me, which is really pleasing.

Yes, they are spooky birds indeed. I too thought this came out pretty impressionistic, glad I'm not the only one thinking so. Thanks a lot for the comment and fave!

Cool ! really good. ( and as you know, I like owl too ) Krita really add dynamism to your art. I knew only your painting touch till now with Mypaint ( this last have unfortunately tendencies to make woobly, blury and smudgy rendering to eveything without a strong unsharp filter ). Thin opacity layer using the sketch brush really suit well your way to build the image. I also like the hue variations.

Thanks for your comment deevad! I like Krita so far, the addition of more advanced brush engines do help create rather interesting brush structures. MyPaint is excellent for its simplicity and workflow though, I've not found MyPaint's rendering to be more smudgy than any other program, interesting that you would have that opinion. I'll have to think more about it.
The Krita sketch brush was fun to use though, will probably use that more in the future. :)
